Dr. Olivene Burke

Dr Olivene Burke was appointed Director, Mona Sercices, the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus on August 1, 2011 where she has leadership responsibilities for community intervention, implementation and monitoring of social intervention programmes and services to medium and high risk residents of 15 volatile communities in Kingston and St. Andrew as well as Montego Bay.
She has a distinguish career as an educator, administrator, community development specialist, project manager and social scientist. As a lecturer at MSBM, Dr Burke facilitates Learning Strategies, Transformational Leadership & Management and Human Resource Management at Mona School of Business and Management, Mona and Western Jamaica Campuses as well as the Mico University College. She also facilitates executive development workshops and seminars in communication, leadership and small business development.

Dr Burke taught in the Jamaican high school system from 1986 to 1995 then worked at the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) from 1995-2001 in capacities including acting Accreditation Officer, Human Resource Officer and Director, General Administration from where she joined the UWI in 2001 in the capacity of Research Officer, Research and Policy Group, Mona School of Business.

 

Dr Burke graduated from the UWI, Mona Campus with a BA (Honours) in Language and Literature with Social Sciences; Nova Southeastern University with an MSc in Human Resource Management (Honours) and UWI, Mona, Doctor of Philosophy in Education and Shortwood Teachers College with a Teacher Training Diploma. These are in addition to ongoing professional development certificates and diplomas.

 

Dr Burkes has co-authored and published one book, several book chapters and journal articles. She also delivered several conference papers locally, regionally and internationally and has held worshops with young people in several places including Belize.

 

An advocate for civic duties, Dr Burke has served on several public and private sector boards and committees including the JN Advisory Committee, Centre for Leadership and Governance, Grace Missionary Church Council, Human Resource Management Association of Jamaica, Caribbean Area Network for Quality Assurance in Tertiary Education, UWI Research Days Steering Committee, among others. In addition to the many hats, Dr Burke still finds time to perform civic duties as a Justice of the Peace and is the President of the Lions Club of Mona.

 

She is married and has 3 adult children; two boys and a girl.
