INTRODUCTION
The 2017 renewal of the MSBM Conference on Business and Management is the third in a series that aims to frame scholars and practitioners as partners in the task of rigorously interrogating the theory and practice of business and management with a particular focus on the challenges faced by businesses in small island developing states. Aside from vigorous engagement between the university and the business community, the two previous conferences have resulted in one special edition of the regional journal Social and Economic Studies and ongoing work towards, among other things, a special edition of Entrepreneurship and Regional Development.
The MSBM Conference recognizes that over the years, business scholarship has been characterized by inadequate focus on the challenges of businesses located in small developing economies. The conference will respond to this gap by providing a forum for the sharing of ideas about the role of business and management practice, scholarship and education in the advancement of economies such as those in the Caribbean Region.
For the third conference the School has decided to focus broadly, on the role and impact of finance in enterprise development, especially in the context of small developing economies.
The Conference seeks to attract national, regional and international scholars who are writing and researching on a range of business related issues as well as the practitioners who are grappling with these issues on a daily basis.
SUB-THEMES
The tag line “Learning, Knowing, Doing”, signals the role of Mona School of Business and Management in knowledge creation and the application of the resulting scholarship to the everyday challenges of business. The theme for the 3rd conference: Driving Transformation – Finance, Enterprise Development and Wealth Creation, signals the desire to explore the connection between finance and the other functional areas of business and enterprise development.
As is customary, the conference is designed to appeal to a broad cross-section of scholars and practitioners. Below is an indicative list of possible sub-themes. Proposals will be considered for panels or papers that focus on the overall theme of the conference or on any meaningful variations of one of the sub-themes.

5. Culture, enterprise development and wealth creation
6. External regulation, self-regulation and dynamic changes in the financial sector
7. The implication of new information technology for financing mechanisms (from Microfinance to Crowdfunding to BitCoin)
8. The disruptive implications of new FinTechs (Financial Technology Startups) on the traditional banking and financial sector
9. Financing development in small island developing states
10. Integrity in business finance - corporate governance and ethics
11. The special challenges of sectoral finance
12. The changing landscape of financial intermediation
13. Stimulating enterprise financing (e.g. the role of stock exchanges)
14. Business renewal, continuity and reengineering: The role of the financial sector
15. Exploring the link between finance and other functional areas of management (scholarship and practice)
16. The evolving role of Mutuals (i.e. building societies, credit unions, etc.) for social, economic and enterprise development in the Caribbean financial services landscape.
SUBMISSIONS, AWARDS & PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITIES
Interested parties may submit individual papers or panel proposals relating to any aspect of the overall themes of the conference or to any sub-theme, though the suggested sub-themes are by no means exhaustive. All papers will be considered for publication in an edited volume or a special journal issue. A number of awards will also be given, including that for Best Paper.
The typical panel will comprise of four presentations lasting for 15 minutes each, followed by 20-30 minutes of discussion.
